Integrated Controller Working Positions

ICWP, ITWP in air traffic control refer to a concept where air traffic controllers can perform multiple functions or positions in a single working position.

Traditionally, air traffic controllers are assigned to specific positions, such as air control, ground control, apron control, or clearance delivery. With the implementation of ICWPs, however, controllers can now perform these tasks from a single integrated working position.

This approach allows for increased flexibility in air traffic control operations, as controllers can quickly switch between tasks and respond more efficiently to changing traffic demands. Additionally, ICWPs can help reduce the number of personnel required in the tower, while still maintaining a high level of safety and efficiency.

A modern tower contains many individual control screens displaying various systems such as Meteorological information, Electronic flight strips, and A-SMGCS for safe movement of aircraft and vehicles. All these screens demand controllers’ attention, to a level where more time can be spent looking at the various screens, rather than looking out of the control tower windows, observing what is happening on the airfield.

The use of ICWPs permits the integration of several different screens into one single screen, so that the controller has access to the critical control information all in one location. This allows for safe and efficient control of air traffic ground movements.

It usual for an Air Traffic Control Tower to contain a number of ICWP’s, each of which can be configured to perform a specific tower function such Air Control, Ground Control or Apron Control. The system usually permits the reconfiguration of any of the ICWP positions to perform the tasks of another position depending upon traffic density, weather conditions and number of control personnel.

The implementation of ICWPs is part of a broader trend towards integrated air traffic control systems, which aim to optimize airspace usage and improve the overall safety and efficiency of air travel.
